As a graduate architect and urban designer, Katie has gained a comprehensive understanding for an inclusive approach to making public spaces more engaging, equitable, and safe. After graduating in 2016, Katie moved to the Virginia-Highlands area to start her career and worked in Inman Quarter for her first two years.
In the past 2 years, Katie has come to believe Virginia-Highlands is the best intown neighborhood in the area – full of historical character, great weather, walk-ability, and wonderful neighbors.
In March 2018, with the help and guidance of shop owner and friend, Cat, brainstorming began on the revitalization process of the Virginia-Highlands sidewalks and vibe. To execute, Katie and Catina founded Beautify VaHi in April 2018 and hit the ground running, starting with a neighborhood discount card, later known as the VaHi Perks Plus card.
To Katie, Beautify VaHi is an advocacy group, focused on placemaking ideas, community engagement and fundraising to beautify, activate and maintain our business corridor. Research and experience have shown Katie that big things can happen when private and public entities work together to get things done. Life has shown Katie that it’s always better when “friends and flowers” are involved. Urban planner, Jane Jacobs, famously quoted “liveliness attracts liveliness” when referring to our precious sidewalk life; that is her goal and inspiration.
Catina “Cat” Stavroulakis started her business career in 2001 in the San Francisco Bay area. She is the founder/formulator of the Salt Project brand products and is also the owner of ART BATH SOUL Enrichment Lounge, located in the heart of Virgina-Highland – est. spring 2017.
In making products and then offering them, her underlying intention is of wellness, beauty, enrichment and a full-sensory experience.
In 2009, she visited in VaHi, and it remained in her minds-eye. In 2016 the opportunity came to join the neighborhood and of course she did, enthusiastically.
Making a difference and making things beautiful is her nature. To Cat, Beautify VaHi is a labor of love to help renew the area for the betterment of all business, thereby increasing consumers’ experiences and improving customer retention…and of course, she loves flowers
